Basic Intro to Halkidiki

Halkidiki is a three-finger shaped peninsula jutting out from mainland Greece just southeast of Thessalonika. The three fingers are individually known as Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. Its capital is Poligiros approximately 42 miles from Thessalonika and the nearest airport, the Airport Macedonia.

It is an area of great natural beauty with a long history of habitation, evidenced by the archaeological sites at Olynthos and Toroni. Some of the oldest surviving Macedonian mosaics have been found at Olynthos. The visitor to Toroni, situated in the Sithonia peninsula, will find a long curvin beach of golden sands. Legend says that the town was named after the wife of Proteus, the son of Poseidon. It has a history of habitation reaching back almost 3,000 years probably owing in part to it stategic location near Greece's largest natural harbour at Porto Koufo.

Potidea, its history going back to Corinthian times, is found at the at the head of the Kassandra peninsula and has golden beaches and blue seas with all the facilities the tourist needs for a wonderful holiday.

Stagiri close to ancient Stageira, where Aristotle was born. The ruins of old furnaces can be found around the village as this was the location of a 'mint' in the 16th century, during the years of the Ottoman Empire. The town is about 5 miles, inland, from the coast and is located on the lower slopes of the Stratoniki Mountain. It is found on the approaches to the peninsula of Mount Athos, home to the many monasteries and monks who live there.
